Hafodyrynys V Aberbargoed

Match report 01/10/16

Aberbargoed travelled to Hafodyrynys for this week’s game.  The visitors made a slow start to the game with early pressure from the home side, resulting in the opening score under the posts. The conversion gave Hafod a 7 - 0 lead.  With their tails up Hafod scored a second try, the result of powerful work from their forwards, this try went unconverted and the score board was updated to reveal 12 – 0 an early lead.  Slowly but surely Aberbargoed began to get a foothold into the game, this resulted in good field position but unfortunately this proved fruitless.  Aberbargoed continued to make positive progress as the ball was moved across the back line, the ball was slow but Chris Jenkins made the best of it, making good ground.  Aberbargoed went through 3 phases of play which saw them just short of the home side’s line, when scrum half Dean Higgs’ snipping run saw him go in under the posts.  Rhys Hagerty added the 2 points for the conversion and the score board read 12-7.  Aberbargoed kept the pressure on but Hafod had the edge on the set piece the going was tough, however, Geraint Edwards’ excellent work around the fringes kept the home side 8 in check.  Edwards was everywhere which resulted in Aberbargoed’s backs having quick ball, they used it well and with the ball moving through good hands Rhys Edwards scored in the corner, converted effortlessly by Rhys Hagerty – the visitors were now in the lead 12-14.  The home side attacked hard but excellent defence by the visitors kept them out, one more penalty from the book of Rhy Hagerty placed the score at 12-15 at half time.

The second half started with Aberbargoed making inroads into the home sides half, however, the Hafod forwards made it hard at the breakdown resulting in them turning the ball over.  Aberbargoed kept working hard and they were eventually rewarded with a penalty which was taken quickly by scrum half Higgs who was tripped, the referee gave the home player a warning and a second infringement for the same offence saw him issued with a yellow.  Hafod were now down to 14 men but the visitors could not break down the home side.  Aberbargoed used its bench and brought on fresh legs but the game continued much the same, Hafod were now back to full strength.  A kick across the field by Aberbargoed caught the visitors off side resulting in a penalty, the home side capitalised and the outcome was a try out wide.  With the kick to come, the Hafod outside half kept his cool, slotting the ball between the posts and the score showed 19-17.  Both sides tried hard to get the win but this score concluded the points of the game.

Geraint Edwards took man of the match for the visitors which was a well-deserved reward for his excellent work all game.

Next week Aberbargoed entertain West Mon in the second round of the BOWL.
