Match Report Rhymney V Aberbargoed

Match report 17/09/16

Rhymney V Aberbargoed

On a bright and sunny day Aberbargoed made the short journey to opposition Rhymney for their debut in Division 3 East B.  Aberbargoed won the toss and Rhys Hagerty opened up the game for the visitors.  From the first kick Aberbargoed’s forwards dominated the game and looked intent on making this a strong factor of their game plan.  Ten minutes in and Aberbargoed were penalised for an infringement and punished when Rhymney successfully kicked a penalty.  From the restart Aberbargoed were once again dominant up front - this impressive performance together with the massive tackles the Aber squad were making clearly rattled the Rhymney squad.  30 minutes into the game, after a period of good running rugby by Rhymney, the home side were rewarded with a try and conversation putting them 10 points to the good and firmly in the lead.  An interval of intense forward play by the visitors followed when at around 35 minutes, a minor injury to the home prop resulted in Rhymney calling uncontested scrums – this decision did not go down well with the Aber squad or fans; a few minutes later a further infringement by Aberbargoed saw Rhymney rewarded with another penalty, this time in front of the posts, and the home side led 13 – 0 at half time.

The second half saw Aberbargoed significantly change their game plan and five minutes in Rhys Edwards secured the first of three tries by the visitors which was successfully converted by Rhys Hagerty, score 13 -7.  The game carried on with both teams narrowly missing opportunities to score.  After a period of intense play on and around the Rhymney 5 metre line Aberbargoed were rewarded with a try from forward Gavin Thomas unfortunately this try was unconverted and the home side were still one point in the lead at 13-12.  The game continued in the same manner with both sides making breaks and mistakes.   For the remainder of the game both teams fought hard to become the victors with periods of play on each teams try line, Aberbargoed defended well and managed to prevent Rhymney from scoring, however, another infringement by Aberbargoed put Rhymney 4 points in the lead in the final minutes of the game.    Never giving up Aberbargoed continued to push forward and finally Geraint Edwards make a break and touched down on the try line following a lovely back pass by Alex Hope, this try was once again unconverted. Now for the first time in the match Aberbargoed were in the lead at 17 – 16.  No further scores were recorded and the final score of 17-16 secured the win for Aberbargoed.

Next week Aberbargoed entertain Tredegar Ironsides at home.
